WHY AM I DOING THIS?
By Linda M. Penn
Welcome to Linda’s blog! I was recently asked by a friend, “Linda, why are you doing this book thing?” You may have the same question. My answer is, “I feel for kids.” Let me explain.
I love working with kids and seeing delight on their faces when they enjoy a book. I remember when my daughters, Natalie and Lisa, were little and they would beg me to read the same books over and over. Okay, I’ll admit it – I got tired of those books, but I saw that delight on their faces when curling up together and reading those books again and again.
I remember going to the Shelby County Library Bookmobile that stopped in our rural area of the county every other Friday. The girls couldn’t wait to get home to read their new selections. (I wonder if there are any Bookmobiles operating anywhere today? If you know of any Bookmobiles still making the rounds of rural areas, please let me know!)
A trip to a local bookstore was an adventure for the girls and me. It not only brought a break for me so I could read something different with the girls (yes, that is selfish, sorry about that!) but now the kids got to pick out new “friends.”
I see the same thing with my grandkids. Allyson’s favorite book is about hunger games, Samantha’s is about a cowboy prince, and Hunter’s is about a little engine that could. Yes, as the kids grow older, their tastes in books change, but those memories will always be there for them and me.
So, in closing, to answer the question of why I’m going this “book thing,” I feel for kids that they deserve the opportunity to get away from their own lives and live in an adventure – to who knows where with an appealing character.
